Haystack Rock
Haystack Rock is a 235 foot tall basalt monolith located just off Highway 101 at Cannon Beach on the Northern Oregon coast. Below the rock, the tide-pools – also known as Haystack Rock’s “Marine Garden” – change dramatically with the rise and fall of the ocean. Haystack Rock’s Marine Garden is a vibrant, living area teeming with abundant marine life; anemones, crabs, purple & orange sea-stars, barnacles and mussels are just some of the creatures you can see and photograph there.
Haystack Rock is also a major nesting and feeding ground for many different types of seabird; Gulls, Pelicans, Tufted puffin, Pigeon guillemot, Black oyster-catcher, Pelagic cormorant and more. You can often catch large numbers of these Pacific Flyers nesting and congregating as they flock together and gain strength for their bi-annual migrations. Please be mindful of the sensitivity of marine life to human interference. Thank you.
